Saturday: English, French, German, Russian
Our day starts with having the chance to get to know the city of Heraklion, Crete’s bustling capital. The birthplace of Nikos Kazantzakis and El Greco gives the sense of a cosmopolitan city at first, but you can find many more if you take the time to wander its back streets and explore it. The imposing fortress of Koules at the port, the Venetian fortifications around the city, the famous Lions’ Square, the many Byzantine churches, the numerous Ottoman drinking fountains, the Municipal Library, the Art Gallery, and the Archaeological Museum are only some of the sights not to be missed. Heraklion has a thriving café and restaurant scene, the island’s best shopping, and lively nightlife -in part thanks to its many students.
After our stop at the city of Heraklion, we visit the famous Saturday open-air market, a bazaar where you can find almost anything you may imagine: the freshest fruit and vegetables, creamy cheese, juicy olives, olive oil, wine, raki, honey, herbs, leather goods, hats, jewelry, toys, cosmetics, fabrics, upholstery – you name it.
For those who wish to experience something different, there is one more destination that you can choose for the rest of the day: the Creta Aquarium. This high-tech indoor sea is situated a few kilometers away from Heraklion. It is inhabited by some 2500 Mediterranean and tropical aquatic critters, and it can surely bring smiles to even the most jaded traveler. You can watch jellyfish, sharks, skates, corals, and anything from small fish to tuna that lives in the Mediterranean. There are also multimedia features and multilingual displays for your convenience.
After our Heraklio tour, we can enjoy our coffee in the café of the building that overlooks the big blue, before we set off to our hotels.

- The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is one of the largest museums in Greece and one of the most important museums in the whole of Europe. Its exhibits are authentic reflections of Cretan prehistory and history (about 7000 years), from the Neolithic Age to the Roman Empire.
